The Golden Apple Awards Ceremony annually honors 10 outstanding teachers from public and non-public schools in Cook, Lake and DuPage counties of Illinois. Teachers are nominated for the award by fellow educators, administrators, past and present students, parents, and the general public. The Golden Apple Foundation, which presents the award, receives about 1,000 nominations every year. Award selection is determined by a volunteer committee of more than 70 professional educators, including former Golden Apple Award winners. More information can be found on the fact sheet.

The press release announcing the 2006 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching winners said this:

Sandy L. Lucas, Fine Arts, grades PreK-6
Murphy Elementary School

A Chicago Public School teacher since 1992 and a professional musician in her own right, Sandy Lucas’s 28 students find a way to share 25 guitars. She floats from student to student while they practice, monitoring finger placement and body position. At the end of the lesson, she reminds them, “We have after-school guitar, because I have not had enough fun today.”
